PATRICIA SHERLOCK

One of the Club’s greatest supporters was Patricia Sherlock, who joined the Riding Club in August 1974, shortly after its inception. Patsy’s involvement, commitment and enthusiasm in all aspects of the Riding Club was unwavering and she was our long-standing President until she passed away in 2007, at the wonderful age of 95. Her good health endured into her early nineties when she was still to be seen hacking around the bridleways of the Sussex countryside together with her riding companion Mo Timmis. The Riding Club has been keen to place a memorial for Patsy on one of her many favourite rides and over the last couple of years has approached various land-owners and land-agents. This has not been without its problems and obstacles in the form of ‘health & safety’ and ‘insurance liability’ ! However, I am very pleased to say that at last this has been achieved. A beautiful rustic bench, locally made in Storrington, has been installed on the Arundel Park Estate by kind permission of Lady Herries. The bench sits high on Windyridge overlooking Lower Barpham Farm with spectacular views for miles across the Downs. This is a very popular riding and walking area and I hope will become a favourite visiting place for all of us with our horses and/or our dogs in the months ahead. The Club will be organising a Commemorative Social Ride to visit this area early in the Spring of next year.
